Santa Ana Street Track Replacement Project:

The construction crew was working at Lemon Street on November 24. This is the location of the famed wig-wag signal. Here is a photo of the wig wag signal and the stopped ballast regulator at Santa Ana Street and Lemon Steet. This is a veiw looking east as the ballast regulator makes its way down the section of new rail. The ballast regulator driver hops back in and starts up the machine.

One of the formen suporvises the work as it progresses. Another man on the work crew scoops loose ballast back onto the row as the small street sweeper is powered up behind. The tractor dumps ballast as the ballast regulator moves to quickly spread it out.

A few photos of the crew as they work on getting a weld to take on a signal relay switch. There was a slight delay in the progress of the ballast work because the weld was not taking correctly.

A close up photo of the rail being placed on top of the tie clips Making some fine adjustments to the rail position. Just east of the rail being layed, another section was being built. This time they were laying ties.
The ties were laid out and then a long section of rail was dragged the distance and laid on top

The rail is measured by two workers. They measured the length and spacing, made a few more adjustments with the Cat and then started on the rail with rubber mallats. The ties are dumped or pulled off the fork-lift attachment on the Cat. And the pincher tools also are used to evenly place the ties.

This photo is looking West towards Manchester Blvd. Looking east over the old rail still in place before replacement had taken place.
After everything east of West Street was completed they came back and replaced a small section just east of the 5 freeway overpass. They assembled the track section right on the vehicle overpass.
